Eticas Foundation is a non profit organization that promotes research, forecasting, awareness, advocacy and training on the interaction between technology, data and society. You may contact us at baddata@eticasfoundation.org
The purpose of this project is to use an experimental crowd-sourcing approach to uncover stories about the social effects of data. Through a series of interventions, the challenge interrogates the narratives of data-driven decision-making from the perspective of the quality of data, rather than its quantity or the outcome of the algorithms that process it.
You will be asked to share a short video, a piece of text, or a voice message in which you tell us about a personal experience related to what is so called as ‘bad data’. Before you decide to participate, it is important that you understand how your personal data will be managed. Please read the following information carefully. Contact us if there is anything that is not clear or if you need more information.
To the best of our knowledge, your participation in the project will not involve any risk.
Although your participation will be mainly useful for our project, you may also benefit by becoming more aware of what ‘bad data’ are from watching our video and thinking critically about your experiences. Also, the results of the project and its dissemination phase could help other people in the future.
As a participant, you will be given cash prize of 20 euros, provided that your story is relevant to our project (see “entry criteria” on our webpage).
Your experience with bad data may be used in publications and presentations, but in an anonymized manner, that is, without including any personal data that may identify you. In other words, if your case is published or presented, individual names and other personally identifiable information will not be used.
However, we will need contact information about you like your email address to inform you whether your story is eligible for the reward. If yes, your PayPal ID/name will be asked via email in order to send you the 20 euros prize.
Nevertheless, to minimize the risks to confidentiality, we will delete your data as soon as you receive the prize. About all the email accounts gathered from all the participants of the challenge, we will delete them once the challenge has been concluded.
We will not share the data we collect from you with other third parties, except when we ask you to fill in the “Google Forms” to share your experience, and when uploading your contribution to our web server, which is hosted in 1&1 company.
Your participation in this study is voluntary. It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part in this study. If you decide to take part in this study, you will be asked to sign a consent form. After you sign the consent form, you are still free to withdraw at any time and without giving a reason, that is, you can still decide not to share your experience. If you withdraw from the study before data collection is completed, your data will be returned to you or destroyed.
If you have questions at any time about this project, you may contact the Eticas Foundation whose contact information is provided on the first page.
