Bob-Emploi algorithm failed to reduce unemployment

Algorithms are often sold to communities with big promises, however, rarely do they entirely deliver. In France, a start-up claimed it could create a platform that promised to reduce unemployment by up to 10% by leveraging AI technology to match the unemployed with job offers (Algorithm Watch 2019). Private and public donations flooded the start-up, and it quickly hired more staff for the project. The initiative, called Bob-Emploi (Bob-job), also was given access to public job seeker data and information and support from the national employment agency. In the end, the start-up failed to make good on its claim. As of June 2018, only 140,000 users had created an account (ibid).
