This course focuses on the digital and technological elements of surveillance and the consequences on privacy. Concepts like sousveillance, dataveillance and counterveillance will be discussed and contextualized.


Week 1 – Sousveillance and counterveillance

Week 2 – Surveillance Industry

Week 3 – Digital identification technologies and dataveillance

Week 4 – Technology and surveillance risks (function creep, disclosure, discrimination, etc.)

Week 5 – Data protection principles and data subjects’ rights

Week 6 – Identification practices and techno-social relations (STS)

Week 7 – Managing data and privacy
